My HO scale AK car models had an informal visit to the Wingham Layout at the Taree & District Model Railway Club Inc. The real AK cars conveniently stabled train NK82 with loco 8132 in the goods shed occupied by the model railway club on the same day.

 | 8th Mar 2008 | The very first train - Epping to Chastwood line Sydney
A little bit of history quietly occurred on 8 March 2008. The very first train to operate over the entire Epping - Chatswood line in Sydney (ECRL) was the AK cars hauled by RailCorp's diesel locomotives 4819/4827 in push/pull configuration. At the time, the site was still a construction site. The track infrastructure was essentially complete, enabling the first train to operate. The AK cars record track and overhead wire geometry, and were used as part of the commissioning process. 2 more subsequent runs of the AK cars occurred in 2008. Regular CityRail passenger services commenced on 23 February 2009.

Some photos I took from the AK cars of damage to railway infrastructure, and other damage visible from the train. It can give you an idea of the incredible downpour that occurred. The railway was reopened only a few hours before we passed through. Repairs were still underway, with speed restrictions in many areas. The damage was spread over 200km from the Grafton area in northern NSW to Bromelton in SE QLD.
